ROADBLOCK
The roadblock of shame divides Deryneia in two. The Turkish army has illegally occupied 75% of the territory of Deryneia since 1974. This percentage includes a big part of the arable land of Deryneia, all its coastal area and Kato Deryneia, which had known a rapid development in the last years before the Turkish invasion.
All around the roadblock, numerous demonstrations against the occupation, peaceful marches and protests have taken place since 1974, such as the first Women's Peaceful March in which women from many foreign countries, especially from Greece, participated.
A short distance from the checkpoint, Tassos Isaak and Solomos Solomou were clubbed and shot dead by Attila's assassins.
OCCUPIED FAMAGUSTA CULTURAL CENTRE The Occupied Famagusta Cultural Centre was built at Deryneia Roadblock, on the site where all the anti-occupation demonstrations for Famagusta and our other occupied parts have been taking place since 1974. An observatory functions on the site of the Cultural Centre. The visitor can borrow binoculars to gaze, at least from a distance, at the beloved town and nearly all our occupied land.
Films on Famagusta are projected in the multivalent hall of the Centre, both to the hundreds of foreigners who visit the Centre every day and the pupils of primary and secondary schools who have included the Cultural Centre in their programme of educational trips.
In addition, artistic exhibitions (photography, painting, sculpture etc.) as well as other cultural events, are organised indoors and in outside in the small amphitheatre during the summer months. The Centre is also used for the organisation of seminaries, congresses, lectures etc.
Informative and enlightening material in different languages is distributed free to the visitors.
