In
the honour and eternal memory of Deryneia hero Demetrakis Christodoulou,
the community has erected his bust in the central square, next
to the Byzantine Ayios Georgios Church. The
bust is made of Pentelis marble and was sculpted in Greece.
The erection was achieved by donations from the then Greek
Ambassador and the Community of Deryneia.
The Greek Ambassador, Mr. Menelaos Alexandrakis,
unveiled the bust on 12th June 1966. Under the bust, an inscription
says: HE FOUGHT AND DIED FOR FREEDOM AND STAYED IN PEOPLE'S
MEMORY FOR ETERNITY''
Every year in February, the Municipality of Deryneia commemorates
and honours the hero's memory with pump and circumstance.
